Un sujet délicat

My fellow Quebecers will know this already, but we just had elections yesterday in Québec for the new term.

Two or three times during the campaign, we’ve made note with friends or relatives of how it is a touchy subject to discuss. Yet it was an inescapable temptation to dance around the subject, and try to probe what people will be voting. (This is why I laughed when my sister just dropped the question plainly in a casual conversation on the phone – hi Karine! – « So what are you voting? »)

The subject is especially hot this year, reflected in the election results (though not in the participation, oddly enough). We now have the first minority government since 1878. This is due in good part to the rapid rise of a relatively new party – the ADQ – who had 5 seats in the last term, but are now the official opposition, with 41 seats (against 48 for the Liberals and 36 for the PQ). And this also means they have a decent chance for the next election, unless the other parties work really hard at it. So while it was the Liberals who were re-elected, it really feels like an ADQ victory.

I’m not ashamed of my choice. I voted ADQ, and it seems I wasn’t alone in thinking they could be a good change, a fresh voice. Hey, at least we’re trying something. (Can’t be that much worst.) We’re giving them a chance and we’ll see if they can deliver.

Ingrate! haha ;P

  2. I just spent a few minutes trying to get aquanted with the politics of Quebec but am still not able to really say anything insightful about the elction results. I am, however, jealous of your multi-party system. The American style line-in-the-sand/one-side-or-the-other political machine hasn’t really been impressing me much of late.

Moksha! Sorry I wasted your time so. Actually, the political scene around here used to be pretty much two parties, too, before the ADQ came. It was Liberals (sort of in the middle) against PQ (a party leaning to the left, designed to push for Quebec independancy from Canada… used to be pretty big, but they’re loosing ground now, as they never really renewed their platform). ADQ is a tad more to the right, so far as I know. Their big priority is families, which fits really well into our plan.

    lol Simon!

Sorry people, I just needed to vent out last night’s evening, I guess. The odds were pretty close at times, and it was sort of like watching a horse race.

Note: Alright I just re-edited this comment – apparently I got my left and right mixed up. Sheesh. ;o)
