What religion are YOU?

Thus inquired an add over a linked page from one of Frank’s social bookmarks site. I goggled at the flash banner and clicked. « Even if YOU don’t know what faith you are, Belief-O-Matic™ knows. » As a self-acknowledged agnostic, I just had to try this.

I was totally expecting a silly quizz – « settle the pesky question of your spirituality in 20 quick questions!! »… I mean the site has « Which ‘Lost’ character are you? » in the Soul Surveys category, for heaven’s sake (that’s a bad pun, I know) – but the test is not that bad, with many options for each answer and the possibility to indicate which questions/issues have more importance to you. It also gave me a chance to explore theology just a little, and find out the beliefs of a couple of religions through the links provided.

For those who want to try it out, the site is beliefnet.com and the quizz is Belief-O-Matic.

Apparently, I should be a Unitarian Universalist. From what they say about this faith, it can encompass pretty much everything, so I don’t mind so much. I’m bummed I didn’t score higher as a Taoist, they sound kinda cool. Although the most dismaying part is that I only scored 10% in common with Roman Catholics (it barely made the list), which is what I’m supposed to be. Alright, since you’re dying to know my score, I’ve added it below.

Have fun!
« Even if YOU don’t know what faith you are, Belief-O-Matic™ knows.

»… le site a « Which ‘Lost’ character are you?

Your Results:

The top score on the list below represents the faith that Belief-O-Matic, in its less than infinite wisdom, thinks most closely matches your beliefs. However, even a score of 100% does not mean that your views are all shared by this faith, or vice versa.

Belief-O-Matic then lists another 26 faiths in order of how much they have in common with your professed beliefs. The higher a faith appears on this list, the more closely it aligns with your thinking.

How did the Belief-O-Matic do? Discuss your results on our message boards.

  1. You know I had to do this. Here are my top 10:

    1. Unitarian Universalism (100%)
    2. Liberal Quakers (94%)
    3. New Age (93%)
    4. New Thought (90%)

    10. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (81%)

And the very, very bottom was Jehovah’s Witness.

  2. That Unitarian Universalism seems to be a pretty popular answer round these parts. I wonder if that’s becasue we are all on the same wave-length or because they’re so freakishly inclusive that a huge percentage of the population get them as their top choice.

I was kinda bummed to see Buddhism lower than Scientology on my list. But, spot 11 was Mahayana Buddhism, so if I add the Buddhisms together…they’re by far my top spot. 😉

Hum.

  4. 1. Secular Humanism (100%)
    2. Unitarian Universalism (92%)
    3. Theravada Buddhism (80%)

    I suspected as much.

  5. Frank had Secular Humanism as first as well.

Moksha, I’m not sure you can add them up, hehe. Most likely the aspects that give you a closeness to one kind of buddhism are repeated in another kind, so… ah, forget it.

Starting the test, I was wondering (hoping?) if I’d get buddhism (zen!) at the top of my results, but found out there are some aspects of buddhism I’m not as comfortable with – « Life is suffering », the emphasis on karma/rebirths (I like the idea, but not as a main focus), their position on abortion, homosexuality, etc. Taoism beliefs seem more comfortable to me (balance, yin-yang, and all that). Here’s an excerpt I particularly like:
« Taoism is not a salvific practice. There is nothing that one needs to be saved from, and belief in salvation would lead to belief in damnation in the same manner as belief in good leads to belief in evil. Although they do not accept the false duality of salvation vs. damnation, living simply in harmony with Te and Tao, and not excessively pursuing material wealth, stature, or prestige, will lead to a joyful life. »

  6. I realized i never posted a comment here with you Émilie, and thought this was an interesting place to start.

I do agree that the results seem to meet what I beleive, though I would never actually apply those titles to my self. It is nice to know that three clubs would want me to join, ignoring Groucho Marx’s line.

  7. Hi! I’m sorry but… you posted as « Anonymous » and didn’t jot down your name! If you pass by here again, could you say? I’m trying to guess who you are, but I’m drawing a blank. If by « Groucho Marx’s line » you mean you have a mustache… I still don’t know.
