I’m throwing your way a list of first names we like – some more than others, some are just little whims we like to keep on the list, and some are more Frank’s preference or mine. Anyway, it gives you an idea of our likes. You’re invited to offer suggestions and/or give an opinion on the names suggested.

Moi mon choix sans équivoque cest Agathe….cétait dans mes choix. Jai connu une Agathe, une vraie soie! Jaime beaucoup Rose aussi. Il y a Winnifred que je n’avais jamais entendu… est ce une invention de votre cru???? Pour être franche, ça me fait un peu trop penser à Wilfred : ) ….mais bon, ce serait un nom unique, c’est certain. Dorade, je n’avais jamais entendu, mais c’est tres joli. Orly aussi c’est pas mal…. il y a une chanson de Brel qui se nomme ainsi, vous comprendrez qu’Éric aime bien aussi…
Ici de notre côté on a seulement 2 noms…. donc, vu que nous désirons garder cela secret, nous préférons ne pas trop en parler pour l’instant… et à vrai dire… il y a encore place au changement!!!
EN passant, m-c est partie accoucher! Jai tu hâte de savoir le sexe de ce bébé la et d’y voir la bette…. ça fait juste me rendre encore plus impatiente d’avoir mon ti loup dans mes bras…. AHHHH! Célong!!!

My top pick would have to be Daphnee (I can’t do the accent). It’s very pretty. I also love Maya, and Orly sounds cool. What does it mean? Finally Dorade deserves to stay in the running I think. Also quite pretty.

I really like the uniqueness of the list. That’s what helps make a name work for me. Not totally « out there », but not terribly ordinary, either. (Not that there’s anything wrong with ordinary, just citing my preference.)
My first reaction was to sort of smile at the option of « Orly ». Just because that’s become a fairly popular internet slang expression for « Oh, really?! » Think of LOLCats… and here’s an example.
I think my favourites from that list are Dorade and Winnifred. Dorade I’ve never heard (or read) before, and I like the strength and confidence of the hard consonant sounds. Winnifred surprises me that I like it, but it sounds (and looks) very classy.
If Amy and I had a girl the second time around (as I may have mentioned before… not too sure), her name would have been « Tessa ». Just throwing that out there.
Ge: Agathe est davantage un choix à moi, je crois que François en rafole moins. J’avais pas pensé que Winnifred ressemblait à Wilfred, oups! mais ça fait longtemps que je l’avais en tête… (et non, ce n’est pas une invention, mais tu es la 3e à penser ainsi, alors tu ne serais sûrement pas la dernière… à considérer). Si tu veux un exemple concret, je crois que la doyenne (ou 3e doyenne) du Québec, si elle vit toujours à 115 ans, s’appelle Winnifred, alors c’est assez vieux comme nom – comme Xavier, quoi! Et puis on pourrait l’appeler « Winnie »! Je crois qu’Orly est un nom de gars, oui, mais j’aime bien pour une fille aussi.
Puisqu’on n’a pas eu de nouvelles de Marie-Claude, j’avais aussi l’impression que son accouchement devait être en cours ou terminé. J’ai bien hâte aussi de savoir si elle a eu gars ou fille!… Je compte sur Marie pour nous envoyer des photos dès qu’elle aura pris un peu de repos!
Tal: Congrats on the bilingual skills. Maya and Orly haven’t been researched yet, they are just there on sheer « we like the sound of it ». Dorade, however…
DORADE is a constellation. It represents a type of dolphin-fish (actually it is Mahi-mahi fish), and there is a story that seamen would take it for a siren, because this fish would leap and flash silver scales over the waves. I like to think it leaped into the sky, and that’s why they made a constellation for it.
Simon: Exactly my hopes for a name. It was the same the first time around, although ‘Xavier’ seemed to have gained a lot of popularity around here in the last year (I was hoping it would be a little more rare) – but we had already both clicked on it, so… *shrug*. I remember you mentioning Tessa at Tavish’s birth; I also like it, but unfortunately, with Frank’s last name, it would rhyme just a little too much to my taste. Thanks anyway. 😉
I forgot, about Orly… « Oh, really? » Had not idea.
Jai hâte de savoir!!! C’est tellement intriguant! En meme temps, c’est tellement compliqué pour nous, les futurs parents, de trouver un nom que l’on aime, qui nous ressemble et que notre enfant portera bien. C’est vraiment une grosse responsabilité de choisir un nom pour la vie. De notre côté, il était tellement moins compliqué de trouver un nom de fille que de garcon. Nous étions même déjà décidés pour le nom dune future petite fille. Présentement, nous sommes dans les grandes recherches fondamentales sur un prénom de gars que nous aimons, qui n’est pas trop commun ni trop rare…. Je trouve tellement que nous avons fait le bon choix pour Romane, ça ne fait que me donner un poids supplémentaire dans notre décision.
Voilà quelques noms que nous avons trouvé si ca te tente de faire ta ptite curieuse…. Il y en a la dedans que cest un non catégorique de Rick… mais moi je les aime!

On the Cosby show, Elvin and Sandra had twins, a boy and a girl. They were named Nelson and Winnifred after the Mandelas. It also makes me picture a grandmother.

PS: You can also use Natasha’s test: Is it appealing to scream out their name during sex? This is subjective but was very good method for me.

J’aime bien Maverick aussi. Tu peux le surnommer « Mav ». En fait, j’ai un personnage qui porte ce nom (ou presque) dans une histoire que j’écris (de façon très sporadique, mais bon). C’est un petit génie ‘geek’, hehe!
Moi aussi j’ai bien hâte de voir bébé 2 (les deux!) mais en même temps j’ai un peu peur de combien occupés nous allons soudainement être, aille!! Je crois que ma 2e est comme le tien : gigotte encore plus de mon premier, qui pourtant bougeait très bien! Ouf, on a du travail en vue, tous les 4 adultes…
fv, lol! Well, in all truth, I’d rather hear these kinds of things before I slap any of those names onto my newborn, you know? Had not heard Dorade described as a city of gold – will research it.
I do use the stripper name test, although I wouldn’t have thought of Phoenix as one such name (in French anyway). We mostly get ‘Vanessa’s, ‘Jessica’s and the likes. Had not heard about Natasha’s test, although it sort of scares me: are we *supposed* to find our future child’s name appealing to scream out during sex; is the answer meant for us or for their future spouse? :oO

In my own defence, I never tried the test with girl’s names, which makes a difference to me. I used it for Ben’s name. Eliminated Leonard right away.

J’ai tout de suite aimé Dorade, avant même de lire son symbolisme 🙂 C’est doux, énigmatique…
Agathe est bien aussi … mais j’ai eu un flash de Agathe et BoumBoum… et c’est une pierre alors j’ai le thème des Pierrafeus dans la tête.
Aussi j’ai une préférence pour les noms à consonnance française plutôt qu’anglaise pour l’agencement au nom de famille et peut-être mon petit côté traditionnel ou patriotique.
Quoi qu’il en soit, votre liste est pleine de jolis noms. Mon top 3 est Dorade, Rose et Maya pour le moment 🙂 Bonne délibération avec François xxx

Amélie, les Pierrafeu sont la plus grande faiblesse du prénom Agathe, je crois, hehe. Quoique d’une autre façon c’est mignon pour une petite fille, quand même… si elle a les cheveux roux (ce qui m’étonnerait) je pourrais lui faire une petite couette avec un os. 😉 Mais bon, je trouve aussi que le nom manque un petit peu de douceur, malheureusement. J’aime bien l’idée d’un prénom associé à une pierre, par contre.

Agathe – old school, I like that. Since there aren’t many Agathes around any more, I would assume she would sprend a great deal of time hearing comments about Agathe Christie…but other than that, it’s a cool name.
Allison – a very cute name, probably gets my vote from this list. It’s a soft, cuddly name to me.
Anastasia – Not as crazy about. It’s pretty, but when I picture a non-animated Anastasia, I don’t picture a nice person. But then, it could be tainted by that nasty little Anastasia I went to high school with. So it’s probably just me.
Daphnée – I dig this. Third place vote. I met a little Daphnee at the mall over the weekend. She was very excited to press the elevator button.
Dorade – While I love the meaning, I’m having a hard time thinking of this as a name. But that’s probably my Midwest American bias showing 😉
Maya – A poet, an SNL cast member, an awesome S. American empire…what’s not to love? Second vote, just under Allison…maybe even first. It’s a close one.
Phoenix – Not a big fan, personally. Feels too… »cool » if that makes sense. I mean, it’s like naming your kid « Nemisis » or something. It’s a cool word…but as a name it feels like you’re trying too hard. It may very well be different in French.
Orly – I wasn’t aware of this name…but it’s growing on my as I keep mulling it around in my brain. Not my top pick, but not bad.
Rose – Makes me think of old ladies. True…some have said the same of Norah…so I can’t throw stones. But the combo of an older name and the smell of roses really seals the image for me, ya know?
Winnifred – While I’m not crazy about Winnifred itself, I like the diminutive « Winnie. » makes me think of Wonder Years…in a fond way.
Overall…I like the list. There isn’t one on here that would be a bad choice. It’s tough making suggestions like this to someone in another culture and language. The connotations of sounds and names may be very different.
And what? No Piper? 🙂
Ma copine qui est enceinte appelera sa fille Émeraude (si cest une fille) j’aime bien les noms de pierre et de fleurs moi aussi. Je trouve que cest tres doux et féminin….

Phoenix: « It may very well be different in French. » Yeah, it just doesn’t work in French, sadly. I mean it could, but it’s terribly English. The French word is Phénix, really, but I prefer the English spelling and sound. BUT then I’m just slapping an English name on my French baby, and as much as I’d like a name that works in both languages, well… that means it would have to work in French. To be honest, I really like the name Phoenix, and it is the name I use to name it now when I speak in my head to the baby-to-be (Xavier’s foetus name was Tonnerre – Thunder in French), but in the end I think it won’t be our final choice – although I might probably place it as a secondary, third or fourth first name on her birth registration. And no Piper. 🙁 Although I really like that name, it is, like Phoenix, terribly English… even more so, in fact. :/

Anastasia is a wonderfuly formal name also, but does have that ‘princess’ feel to it.
Hey BOB 🙂 I also have a liking for names that come with a diminutive. This is actually what I like about Anastasia, which can be divided up into so many ways (Ann, Anna, Annie, Tass, Tazie, Zia…). I get the ‘princess’ feel, although truth be told people around here aren’t that keen on Russian history – despite the animated movie – and I’m not sure the majority would even associate the name Anastasia with that of a princess. (And she will be our little princess anyway…) One drawback of ‘Annie’ as a diminutive is that Frank’s sister is named Annie, so there would be repetition.
Incidentally, Frank’s parents named him and his brother with France kings’ names – François and Philippe. I’m not sure if his sister’s name is a Queen’s name, though; would have to ask.
PS. I think you’re leaving for your trip in a short time, aren’t you? I hope you have fun and make the best of it!
Another vote for Daphne. I like Dorade as well. Wasn’t keen on Anastasia until you pointed out all the possible diminutives.
I had a dream a year or so before I got pregnant with our second, Ethan. In it I had a baby but Mike was away on business and I’d gone unconscious so my aunt had named her Jenna. I’d never even THOUGHT of that name before. But I like now. Also fond of Olivia and Claire, though they may be getting overused, Madelyn or Madeleine, and Tatania (though I’d likely shorten that in use to Tania). Oh, and Ariane – my favourite name from a novel.
Like Tasha, I use the yell test. However, what I’M trying to ascertain is does it sound sufficiently ominous when the child is in trouble. « Jared Allen Swainston, clean up this mess RIGHT NOW!! »

Maya or Anastasia have the most ear-pleasing sounds for me, though perhaps they would rhyme too much with their last name? Winnifred, no, sorry – that final syllable just lands with a thump, even in French, and it really doesn’t pass the Vincents’ test! I do like traditional (i.e. grandmotherly names) for girls – we went with Kathleen – so I find myself drawn to Agathe as well. Fiona was our choice if #2 was a girl, but now all I can think of is Shrek with that name, so it’s quite lucky we had a Liam instead.
